I found this awesome orange chair by the dumpster. It needs a little cleaning, but what a cool chair for free!

Oh, and the red "leather" CD/DVD holder was three bucks at the thrift store. AND, the huge, two panel curtains were five bucks.

I am no longer a Luddite when it comes to cameras. I have finally joined the digital age with a Nikon Coolpix 5900. The zoom doesn't work, but all of the other settings do including macro...

Not bad for a 5 buck camera, with a 512 MB SD card, from the thrift store.

This isn't a black and white photograph. I actually shot this on Fuji colorslide film. It's 15 multiple exposures of a corner lamp post on a single slide on a snowy day. I like how it makes the street almost look like an iced-over stream with ghostly reflections in it.

I don't know why I don't shoot with b&w film very often....I tend to always like the results.

Life update

Just got a call from my mom and found out my grandpa died this morning. He had fallen and broken his hip about two weeks ago and wasn't a candidate for surgery. He told everyone he was ready to go and be with grandma and his death was incredibly peaceful.

Polaroid

I haven't mentioned on my blog, but I collect Polaroid cameras. I don't have a large collection by any means, but I have made some wonderful buys in thrift stores, garage sales, and craigslist. I have an SX-70 II in its original box (with a Kamera flash to fit in its original Woolworths box), a ColorPack I, a ColorPack II, a Captiva SLR, a JoyCam, and the first One-Step (in its original carrying case). But, as we Polaroid lovers know, the discontinuation of Polaroid film has made it impossible to find it except for a few overpriced exceptions on Ebay (and I've yet to win a bid).

In spite of this, I still collect Polaroids because I love them. But I have missed being able to take those wonderfully faded, slightly out-of-focus pictures. So imagine how happy I was to find a Polaroid 600 on my local craigslist (600 films are more widely available). It even came with film, which is slightly out-of-date and is producing some wonderfully washed-out pictures.

Don't you feel like you could walk down this breezeway and go right back into the 70's? And, hopefully, the Impossible Project will be a success and bring back more film for us Polaroid lovers.

Last Monday at work, the freezing rain started coming down and we were allowed to leave early. I am one of those "other" drivers that can't drive when it's icy. An incredibly nice woman from work offered to give me a ride home. I wanted to give her something as a little "thank you" and found this beautiful crochet bookmark pattern from the talented crochetroo.

It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but I mounted it on a piece of light green cardstock. Hope she likes it.

Wow, I didn't really plan on being away this long. Real life became busy as it does and then the holidays and well...blah, blah, blah. I just got burned out. I think the time away has been good, though. I've been doing some crafty things with my wonderful girl gang and have a couple of new story ideas (haven't written anything in months!!).

Anyway, here's another AOL CD project....I really like the fortune, "You stand in your own light, make it shine." Good for the new year, right?

Playing with Photoshop

Craft Night Fun

So, you know those annoying AOL CDs you find for free just about everywhere? Well, I took a bunch from my local 7-11 (they didn't mind) and decided to see if I could make something with them. I found some great Asian-themed scrapbook papers at Michael's and, combined with some fortunes from fortune cookies (what? you don't save yours?!) and Mod Podge, started making these.

From an email I just sent to friends:

I just got the phone call that I knew was coming...my grandma (my dad's mom) just passed away. She had been battling the last stage of Alzheimers for a while now, so it was just a matter of time.

As [friend's name deleted for privacy] has said many times about her mom, this is actually a blessing. The world had been a scary place for her for quite a while now and her own body stopped functioning as a basic human being in the last few months. She couldn't physically do anything for herself and, for my grandma, that was hell. I know she's in a better place. I do worry about my grandpa now, but I know my family will rally around him.

Everything that made her "her" had been stripped from her in these last couple of years, but I know it's all being restored now.

So, there are two more computer playtoys I want, but I thought they were so far out of my financial reach that I'd just have to stare at pictures of them and sigh longingly.

The first is an Epson 1400 large format photo printer. It prints from 4X6 up to 13X19! It prints 12X12 sheets which would be perfect for me in scrapbook page design. The second toy is an Epson V200 scanner. I really want it because it scans color slide film (yes, I use old-fashioned "film" and I love Fuji Sensia color slide film). Then I could scan my slides onto my computer.

Anyway, I just found, on the Epson site, that both of these models have refurbished models in stock with free shipping. They're considerably less than new models and the refurbished just means people sent them back (they work fine). They may be missing something (I checked both and the printer comes without a USB cable...no problem).

My next paycheck...so getting the printer. And the paycheck after that...time for the scanner!
